Urine Culture
General Information
Generally speaking, urine does not contain any bacteria apart from the bacteria found in the normal genital flora. A few drops of urine are enough to grow and identify bacteria in urine.
What is the purpose of this test?
A urine culture is used to confirm the presence of an infection in the urinary system. This test is helpful as it clearly identifies the agents responsible and allows for appropriate treatment. In those who use catheters or other urinary devices, urine cultures confirm the absence of infection. A urinalysis is often performed on the sample to round out the urine culture.
Preparation
- The recent antibiotic use should be mention.
- Urine must be collected in a sterile container, sold in pharmacies.
- Wash hands properly before collecting the urine.
- It is advisable to prepare the container before and to avoid touching the inside of the container at all times.
- The first urine of the day is preferred because it is more concentrated.
- It is recommended that the men collect their sample midstream and that women collect their sample after having cleaned their vulva and vagina.
- When collecting urine, men should retract the foreskin and women should spread open the lips of their vagina until they have finished collecting the required amount.
- If a woman must collect a urine sample while menstruating, she should notify medical personnel since it may contaminate the sample. It is recommanded for the sample to be collected while using a tampon.
- You do not have to be in a fasting state and you do not have to limit your fluid intake before a urine culture.
What does an abnormal result mean?
A positive test usually means that there is an infection in the urinary tract. False-positive results are also possible since urine is easily contaminated. When collecting a sample, it is important to try and avoid introducing bacteria from the genital organs. It is therefore strongly suggested that you follow the sample collection recommendations.
What to know before going for this test
Before going for a blood test, examination or other, it is always a good idea for you to have a complete list of all prescription and over the counter medications and/or natural products you may be taking. If you are unsure or have any questions, your pharmacist will be able provide you with additional information.
