Modified Dakin's Solution
This easy-to-prepare, inexpensive, and disinfecting solution can be prepared at home. Always follow these quantities, and prepare a new solution each time you need it. Use it for external use only. Discard any unused portion.
|Modified Dakin's Solution|
|4% bleach (e.g., La Parisienne™)||5 mL (1 teaspoon) in 800 mL (3 cups) boiled water|
|6% bleach (e.g., Javex™)||5 mL (1 teaspoon) in 1200 mL (5 cups) boiled water|
|Use once or twice daily.|
Protect intact skin.
Rinse the skin with boiled water after treatment.
This solution should not be use on a regular basis. Some believe that, even though it is an effective antiseptic, it may sometimes delay healing.
You can also prepare a chlorine-free solution at home. It is very effective but more expensive. It is odourless and will not discolour clothes.
|Chlorhexidine 1:2000 Solution|
|20% Hibitane solution (Baxedin™)||2.5 mL (1/2 teaspoon) in 1 litre (4 cups) water)|
|Discard any unused portion|
Remember: Washing the hands frequently is a simple measure that significantly reduces the risk of transmitting most contagious diseases.
