Common uses
This medication is typically used to decrease blood cholesterol levels. It may also be used for itching, as well as for other uses. Even though you may not feel its effects, this medication takes effect after a few weeks.
How to use this medication
Dissolve this medication in a glass of water or juice, stirring with a spoon. Wait until all bubbles disappear. Stir again before drinking.
Do not take any medication in the hour preceding or the 4 hours following the use of this resin. The resin could greatly reduce the absorption of other drugs.
This medication is typically used twice a day. However, your pharmacist may have suggested a different schedule that is more appropriate for you. Important: Follow the instructions on the label. Do not use more of this product, or more often, than prescribed.
It must be used regularly and continuously to maintain its beneficial effects. Be sure to keep an adequate supply on hand. It is preferable to take this medication with a meal.
Possible side effects
In addition to its desired action, this medication may cause some side effects, notably:
- it may cause bloating;
- it may cause heartburn;
- it may cause constipation -- to prevent this, drink plenty of water or juice, and eat more dietary fibre;
- it may cause stomach ache;
- it may cause nausea or, rarely, vomiting.
Storage information
As with most medications, this product should be stored at room temperature. Store it in a secure location where it will not be exposed to excessive heat, moisture or direct sunlight. Make sure that any leftover portion is disposed of safely.
Nutritional impact
When using this product over a long period of time, you will develop an increased need for certain nutrients. To lower the risk of deficiency, it is suggested that you take a daily supplement of vitamins and minerals for the duration of your treatment. If you have trouble selecting a suitable product, ask your pharmacist for help.
Additional information
This medication may interact with other medications or supplements, sometimes significantly. Many interactions, however, may be dealt with by a dosage adjustment or a change in medication schedule. Check with your pharmacist before using this medication in combination with any other medications (including non-prescription products), vitamins or natural products.
Blood tests must be done regularly while using this medication. A blood sample will indicate whether your treatment is having the desired effect. It will also provide the necessary information for adjusting the dosage to the lowest effective dose, thus decreasing the risk of adverse effects. Be sure to keep all your appointments.
